Reactions Guide

Reactions are selectable displays of emotions that add liveliness to your character and that can be used to interact with other villagers who then most often respond with their own reaction.

How to get reactions

1/ Initial reactions

The first 4 reactions — Delight, Greetings, Joy and Surprise — are taught to you by a resident a few days into the game.

2/ Subsequent reactions

Thereafter, your character will randomly learn 40 additional ones, as follows:

• One reaction per day max.
• The reaction corresponds to the personality of the villager who teaches it.
• There are 5 reactions per personality type.
• For each personality type, 1 out of the 5 reactions is unlocked when becoming best friends with that resident.

3/ Special reactions in game updates

New reactions are added on a regular basis in game updates:

• Haunt and Scare were made available with the 1.5.0 Fall Update. They are respectively taught by Jack and a villager after you give them a piece of candy on Halloween.
• Excited, Here You Go, Sit Down, Sniff Sniff, Ta-da, Take a Picture, Wave Goodbye, Work Out and Yoga, the Hip Reaction Collection from the 1.6.0 Winter Update, can be redeemed with Nook Miles at the Nook Stop in Resident Services.
• Confetti, Feelin' It, Let's Go and Viva can be purchased at Nook's Cranny from February 1st to February 15th, after the 1.7.0 Festivale Update.
• Posture Warm-Up, Arm Circles, Side Bends, Body Twists, Wide Arm Stretch, Upper-Body Circles and Jump are rewarded after completing Group Stretching exercises, a new activity from the 2.0 Update, once a day for 50 days.
• Double Wave, Stretch, Jammin', Listening Ear, Say Cheese, Behold, Eager, Flex, Work It, Act Natural and Hula are learned from the New Reactions Notebook, also introduced in the 2.0 Update. The notebook can be purchased at the Nook Stop with Nook Miles after upgrading Resident Services and after redeeming the Hip Reaction Collection first.

4/ Exclusive reactions from DLC's

Happy Home Paradise DLC:

• Grooving Hop, Groove Right, Groove Left, Soak It In, Side-to-Side, Island Stomp, Airplane, Twisty Dance, Shimmy, Turnip Patch and Arm-Swing Dance are unlocked after attending DJ KK's first concert in the Happy Home Paradise DLC.

With those updates plus the DLC, the total number of reactions is now 88. Scroll down to see them all!

How to use reactions

Press "ZR" to open the Reactions menu, then press "A" on the chosen reaction to select it — and watch your character's display of emotion!

To edit or register reactions in the Reactions menu, press "ZR", then press "X" on the chosen slot — this will open up the full list of reactions. Press "Y" on any reaction icon to test it, press "A" to add it to the menu.
